Just about to leave for Hawaii. Why is there always one person who tries to fit a steamer trunk into the overhead bin? They throw their hands up in the air like they can't visualize the volumetric capacity of the 3rd dimension. This is basic stuff you learn as a toddler - fit the round circle in the round hole, etc. I always wondered why these sorts of spatial thinking questionnaires are on IQ tests. Now I have a reasonable idea. These kinds of people probably also badly estimate other things - like distances between cars while parking, how many jelly beans are in a jar.
You are exactly right. I was tested by my eye doctor and could only pick 2 out of about 12 circles as being 3 dimensional. For me, it is a lack of depth perception, caused by one eye doing most of my vision work.
I have learned to compensate, over the years, and do things such as measuring carry on bags or asking someone else's opinion. The person on your flight evidently does not realize that they have a problem or they may be hardheaded and think that once they bring it on, it will be allowed to stay on!
I hope you have a fantastic time in Hawaii!! Please take a lot of pictures. It is such a beautiful place (I have not been but have seen pictures).

{chuckle} and I feel your pain. My take on it is different. I don't believe it has much to do with spatial/geometric ineptitude but rather selfishness, self-serving, inconsiderate me-me-me views and behavior.
Hey, I call it like it is. Go soak up some sun over a maitai on the beach and forget those louts on the planes.

Did I call them louts? Sorry, I mean jerks, a**holes and imbeciles thinking of no one but themselves. ;)
