I am not always able to give my time to relief efforts. In this particular instance, I was asked to go and I turned it down. I donated to the American Red Cross (my company, being Japanese owned, is matching employee donations).
Donation and giving should feel altruistic, though I feel a personal obligation, or perhaps investment, in the people of Japan. Should it feel any different? I guess that's just navel gazing at this point. I am fairly confident in the ARC to be an effective crisis response organization.
I guess it's time, not money. I wish they could have both. Aaaand I don't write enough about these sorts of things, mainly because I feel the news and internet flogs disaster memes enough as it is.
